Iota Chapter Ques Host “Turkey Trot” Race:
Give Away Holiday Turkeys to Winning Kids & Families
Thanks to the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s Iota Chapter, eighteen families from Chicago’s Englewood community will have unexpected additions to their Thanksgiving dinners this year. The Omegas joined the Chicago Park District staff at Ogden Park in sponsoring the Second Annual Ogden Park Turkey Trot on November 11th. More than 70 young people competed in track races in six different age and gender groups while out of school for the Columbus Day holiday. The top three winners in each group received Turkeys, hens and Cornish hens as rewards for their accomplishments.
“Omega Psi Phi has a long and proud history of supporting the community,” remarked Ron Wright of Iota Chapter and Park Director of Ogden Park. “Any time we can bring together responsible public service organizations and public sector agencies to better serve people in the neighborhoods, we should capitalize on the opportunity.”
Parents of the winning school children were asked to escort children home after they had won the prizes which weighed as much as 15 pounds. Upon learning of the generous gifts, several of the parents expressed high praise for the Omegas for the thoughtful contributions.
“It’s been a tough year, I’m not sure that we would have been able to afford an actual turkey this year,” said one parent. “However, I am thankful to God that the Ques are trying to make life better for us. I wish our children could see more men like them working in the community.
